More evidence the best medicine is what you choose for dinner

In an article in "Cosmos The Science of Everything" reporter Jeff Glorfeld said in an article titled "Med diet may protect against frailty in old age" . . . "Cutting down on red meat and upping olive oil might keep you strong in the winter of life, research suggests." The Mediterranean diet also generally means more fish, nuts and seeds than a typically Western diet.

A team of British researchers noted that . . . "frailty is common among older people and is increasing as the population ages. Characteristics include low energy, weight loss and weakness. Frail individuals are more likely to experience falls, fractures, hospitalization, nursing home placement, disability, dementia, and premature death."

“We found the evidence was very consistent, that older people who follow a Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of becoming frail . . .People who followed a Mediterranean diet the most were overall less than half as likely to become frail over a nearly four-year period, compared with those who followed it the least.”
